SHOWING THIS MONTH AT THE ART MISSION
-I Saw the Light (April 1) After 50 years of sitting on the rights to Hank Williams’ music, Troy Tomlinson decided that the time is right for a biopic on the country music legend. The life of a country music star was not always easy, as we’ve seen in similar movies such as the Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the Line- and Williams was no exception. He was an alcoholic and struggled to stay faithful in his marriage while touring for many months out of the year. Hank is played by the English actor Tom Hiddleston, who sings all of the music himself and even closely mimics Williams’ yodel-inflected style. While Hiddleston’s performance has been praised, many critics are saying the film, overall, doesn’t go quite in-depth enough with its subject, nor does it always succeed as a compelling narrative- glossing over important life events in favor of showing cantankerous outbursts.
