SWV AND NAUGHTY BY NATURE AT BC ARENA
Fans of ‘90s R&B and hip-hop rejoice (hip-hop hooray), SWV and Naughty By Nature are coming to the Arena. That’s not a typo; on February 16, get ready for a throwback.
SWV (Sisters With Voices) got their start singing gospel before going on to be one of the most successful R&B groups of the 1990s and one of the most popular girl groups of all time. Their new jack swing sound brought them a string of successful hits, among them “Weak,” “Right Here/Human Nature,” and “You’re the One,” and they collaborated with an impressive roster of contemporaries: the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, the artist formerly known as Snoop Doggy Dogg, Foxy Brown, Missy Elliot, A Tribe Called Quest, just to name a few. They disbanded in 1998, but have been making moves again as of late: In 2017, Soul Train honored them with a “Lady of Soul” award. Naughty By Nature? How can I explain it? The hip-hop trio first gained acclaim as one of the more polarizing acts of the early 1990s, due in no small part to the misogyny of their 1991 hit “O.P.P” (O is for other, P is for peoples’, the other P, well that’s not so simple). Say what you will about the song, it’s still a party anthem nearly 30 years later... as is the band’s other most enduring songs, “Hip-Hop Hooray.” Through some magical act of fate, both SWV and Naughty By Nature are performing at the Maines’ Arena this month. Take it frame by frame.
WJOB 93.3FM presents SWV and Naughty By Nature at the Maines’ Veterans Memorial Arena (1 Stuart Ave, Binghamton) on Friday, February 16 at 7pm. Tickets on sale now at the arena box office and ticketmaster.com. Proceeds to benefit the Broome County Urban League. More info at broomearenaforum.com.
